The Community Service committee focuses on three major and three or more smaller projects See pictures on the Photo Album.
The following projects were completed and some continues to be in progress:
Support the JABSOM HOME Medical Van- The RCHS provided funding to retrofit the van donated to the John A Burns School of Medicine Homeless Outreach Medical Education to be able to provide medical care at several homeless shelters. The RCHS donated funds to purchase medical equipment. In the past, members participated in providing fun activities during Halloween and Christmas holidays.
Support Homeless Inititatives- Distributed hygiene kits at shelters where the JABSOM Medical Van provide medical care
Rejuvenate the garden at Jefferson Elementary- The club built a garden for the school 10 years ago. The goal was to have the children take care of the garden as a continuing project. However, this project was ignored and left in disarray. At the beginning of the year, the club revisited the garden and collaborated with the Environmental Teacher, who was very interested in working with the children to increase their awareness of “caring for the earth.” The project was started in 3 phases, completing the project with plants that the children can care for and take some pride for their work. This project will offer an intercultural partnership program because the children will plant a tree in the garden and elementary children in Romania will plant the same type of tree in a Romania Elementary School.
Support Literacy with Donated Books to the Jefferson Elementary Library- The club provided funding to the school’s librarian to purchase books for the school. Every speaker at the club’s meeting signs a book which is donated in the speaker’s honor, placed in the library for the children to enjoy.
Support Dictionaries for 3rd Graders- The Club gave out dictionaries to 3 schools and donated back packs to the schools during the school year. The back packs were filled with school supplies for the children.
Collaborate with the Youth for HUGS- The Club reached out to the Interact and Rotaract Clubs to work on a joint community program. The members donated mugs that the students, along with club members, decorated. They filled the mugs with goodies prior to a meeting and stayed to attend the club meeting. The mugs were taken to the HUGS House for families during their Respite Night Off.
Support Youth Scholarship- The Club donated funds to HRYF and RYLA. A student was selected for the $5K HRYF Scholarship. The club also donated to RYLA to support a student attending the RYLA program.
Support Langley Ukulele Ensemble- The Club supported this talented young musical group from Canada for a performance at Dave and Buster and invited other Rotary clubs who enjoyed the entertainment and fellowship.
1. Provide hygiene kits at IHS and fed the homeless at IHS during lunch
2. Christmas Shopping for two families from HUGS (Help Understanding & Group Support)
This is a on-going project where two selected families are escorted to shopping for essentials and toys at Walmart.
3. Mugs For HUGS:
We collected mugs from club members and filled them with candies, etc. and gifted to HUGS staff and part-time workers in appreciation for all their work. The Punahou Interact Club and UH Rotaract Club were involved with this project.
This committee works closely with Youth Services (Includes Literacy) and International Services to share our efforts in completing projects. We work closely with the UH Rotaract Club on joint projects.
