  Club Meeting Mar 28, 2019 Speaker tonight was PE Dr. James Ham who spoke about water sanitation and sustainability efforts in Nepal. International Service Director Arjun, who is from Nepal, shared his own experience drinking unsafe water conditions and being sick. We also acknowledged Paul Jurcsak's birthday-- he celebrated his birthday at the club's meeting.
  SERVICE PROJECT Mar 23, 2019 Mahalo to Liz and Mary Sears for volunteering their time to help with the Serenity Gardena at Pearl Haven, a place where sex trafficking individuals can find respite. Many hands from various D5000 clubs helped to make a difference in this place.
Club Meeting Mar 21, 2019 Dr. Jnr McKup from Papua New Guinea was our speaker. He spoke of how emergency medicine is provided in Papua New Guinea. PE Dr. James Ham goes to Papua New Guinea to share his ER knowledge to the local MD's there. We were fortunate to have many ER doctors come to the meeting to hear how fortunate we have it here and how we can share our talents to those with limited resources

He shared his thoughts on leadership through trivia questions and stories. He is a retired member of the US Marines and shared several nuggets of wisdom.

Club Meeting Jan 31, 2019 RCHS speaker this evening, Patrick Collins from Civil Air Patrol, spoke about the wondering work of this volunteer-run organization. The Hawaii Wing consists of dedicated patriots whose service to the citizens of Hawaii includes critically important tsunami warnings, as well as significant disaster relief and emergency service missions, cadet programs and aerospace education.”He mentioned that Maryknoll School participates as a unit and part of their curriculum.
JOINT CLUBS Human Trafficking March Jan 29, 2019 D5000 Rotary Clubs showed up at Fort St Mall to show awareness against human trafficking and a call to action.The Walk from Fort ST Mall to the Capitol back to the Mall strength in mumbers.

Club Meeting Nov 29, 2018 Today's speaker was Captain Robert Hendrickson from the Coast Guard. We learned many facts about the Coast Guard that we were not aware of and dispelled myths like... Are you part of the military service? The answer- YES!! The meeting had lots of energy and interaction among members. Kudos to Gene for receiving his first Paul Harris award.
Rotary Gives Thanks Nov 24, 2018 Sunsetters from D5000 provided service projects all over Oahu and focused on Kupuna Care. Members helped other Rotary Clubs at the Lanakila Center with painting and some sent to the Waikiki Community Center to deliver food for the Food Pantry. WCC Program Director happily accepts the donations from our club members.

HUGS SHOPPING DAY Nov 11, 2018 Sunsetters gathered together to bring cheer to families from the HUGS House. All enjoyed the early Christmas Shopping at Wallmart and pizza at Sams Club after shopping.
Club Meeting Nov 8, 2018 We welcomed Wendy Suetsugu from Hawaii Keiki and donated a check for the program se support. Today's speaker was Justin Brackett from Oahu Search and Rescue (OASR) organization. The goal is "May they always come home." OASR is an all-volunteer 501(c) (3) non-profit dedicated to Wilderness and Mountain Search and Rescue and Preventive Search and Rescue Organization. Club Meeting Oct 25, 2018 It is Foundation Month so rich, fellow Sunset Member, was tonight's speaker. We learned "all we need to know beyond basic about the Rotary Foundation." Hawaii Men's Shed came as our guests and brought completed woodwork they created to share and sell.

FELLOWSHIP Bocce Ball Sep 22, 2018 Let the games begin. And so it was with Honolulu Sunsetters and guests, who gathered for this fun and competitive game followed by barbecue and potluck. Barbecue Guru Chef Samir and Sous Chef Beth barbecued lamp chops, shrimp on a barbie, chicken and salmon. There was plenty of food for all. Special mahalo to Marco for sharing his Bocce Ball expertise and JB for hosting us at Koolani. Great time by everyone!

Club Meeting Aug 16, 2018 Connie Mitchell from the Institute of Human Services spoke about the homeless population in Hawaii and the many programs IHS provides plus the community partnerships that help IHS. We also recognized Hobans' 49th wedding Anniversary. Many also shared theirs- Ehrhorns'54years, Mary Sears' 58 years and IL Kim's 52 years. Fun and rotarrific meeting!
Club Meeting Aug 9, 2018 Tonight's meeting had Larry Osbourne and Jane Ferreira talk about the great things the Navy League does. Good information and partnership with the community.
Community Service Project Aug 4, 2018 Sunset Rotarians were out at Kalaeloa Shelter to give out Back Packs while the JABSOM HOME Van was providing medical care to the residents. Besides back packs, we also donated hygiene kits to the Shelter. What an inspiring day to work with fellow Rotarians!
Club Meeting Aug 3, 2018 James Jones, entertaining and informative speaker talked about the history of salsa, mambo plus famous celebrities who promoted Salsa and Latin Music. What a treat-- we got up and danced a few steps with instructions. Evening ended with a surprise visit from RIPE Mark Maloney, his wife Gay, Aide, PDGLarry from Kansas, and RI Marketing Cassady Wehba. What a fun night!

Club Meeting Jul 19, 2018 Tonight's Speaker Vivian Best, talked about the Feldenkrais Method. We stretched and moved muscles to feel the tension move away. Many guests and a rotarrific time.
CLUB MEETING Jul 12, 2018 We welcomed Langley Ukulele Ensemble as they performed for the 20th year in Hawaii. What a joyous occasion too as PDG Del Green inducted Marco and the 2018-2019 Board. And the crowd cheered along with Metro's President, Gary Grimmer, as we combined meetings with Metro to celebrate an Inspiring year ahead. FELLOWSHIP 4TH OF JULY Jul 1, 2018 Great way to start the year with our annual 4th of July Celebration at the Zegars. Lots of beef brisket and ribs made by our own chef Rich enjoyed by all while Sunsetters brought side dishes and desserts. Highlight of the evening was recognizing Lee as Honorary Member with a Paul Haris Medal. Great start to a Rotarrific Year!
Club Meeting Jun 28, 2018 This evening, we heard from Jim and Beth who shared about the RI Convention in Toronto. This was Nicole's last meeting so she took the time to acknowledge the board members, the WYC staff and special awards were presented. The Board Members received a compass, to go with this year's theme, "Navigating Together to Change Lives." IL Kim received the Quiet Rotarian Award and Ary Radnaeva, newest member, received the "Spirit Award." Jim and Beth received the "Rotarians of the Year" award.
Club Meeting Jun 21, 2018 USPS Updates from Erling Erikson, Honolulu Post Office Manager of Customer Service, and Smantha Fujimoto, Business Development Specialist. We received great information to apply. This evening we also acknowledged GM Randy's retirement.

Club Meeting Jun 7, 2018 Speaker tonight was Jefferson Elementary School Principal Garrett Zakahi, who spoke on the partnership between Jefferson and our club. The successful programs the school implemented resulted in a 6 year accreditation. Kudos to Garrett and his team!

Club Meeting May 24, 2018 Advanced Practice Nurses from the Hawaii Keiki Program with Wendy Suetsugu came to speak to our club to show where the funds our club provided to them. It was spread out to 15 schools.
District Conference May 19, 2018 District Conference 2018 was held at the Four Seasons, Kapolei. Dr. James Ham received the highest Service Above Self Award-- big surprise to him. Our club received first place for Total Giving, Per Capita and Club Service
Club Meeting May 10, 2018 Dr. Aryun Aryala from UH Department of Geography and Geophysics was our speaker. He showed pictures of the Nepal Earthquake and touched on the natural disaster happening in Hawaii with Kiluaea Volcano erupting in the last few days. We also welcomed IIda Minako from RC of Kobe, Japan, who came with her sister and mother.
Cinco de Mayo May 5, 2018 RCHS held their annual fundraiser- Cinco de Mayo. Salsa Dancing, fabulous silent and live auction, and fabulous music by Mariachi Loco made a successful and fun event. All proceeds will fund our service community projects.

Also- IL received his #9 Paul Harris and White Hat Society Member-- that is donating $45,000 to Rotary International. Thank you, IL, for your generosity

Club Meeting Mar 15, 2018 Jen Stasch, Executive Director of Partners in Care, was tonight's guest speaker. She spoke about the homeless in Hawaii and how Partners in Care are helping and addressing this issue. We also welcomed the JrROTC from Waipahu High, who spoke about how our club helped them in their leadership camp and supplies to help their program. UH Rotaracts also came as our guests.

Club Meeting Feb 22, 2018 Lisa Fowler, CEO of Hawaii Humane Society spoke about the mission of the organization and how they keep animals safe and sheltered. We also welcomed fellow Rotarians from Windward Oahu and WE Club PE from Russia.
Club Meeting Feb 15, 2018 Meals on Wheels here in Hawaii feeds many of our kupunas and those who are in need of nutritious meals. Our speaker this evening gave an informative talk on how Meals on Wheels are making difference on our Hawaii community.
Club Meeting Feb 8, 2018 Club Meeting this evening had Dann Carlson,DOE's Assistant Superintendent and a retired Air Force Officer, who spoke about the public school system and challenges many of the schools face due to limited resources. He also spoke about the improvements the schools have made to make our education system better.
Club Meeting Feb 1, 2018 Speaker did not show up so our wonderful president, Nicole, did a great job improvising and downloaded on you tube topic of discussion on " Meals on Wheels." Great information and fellowship enjoyed by all. We also welcomed Liz Kane's sister, Kay, who is visiting Liz for her birthday.

Club Assembly Jan 18, 2018 PE Mary Hoffman led an informal Club Assembly, starting off with members sharing their experiences when Hawaii State Emergency sent a false missile attack warning. After all shared various outcomes, we got down to discussing the state of affair for the club and updates. It was a review of our strategic plans for this year.
Club Meeting Jan 11, 2018 Our first meeting of the year was back on a Thursday. Speaker tonight was by former UH Coach and author, Dick Tomey, who gave an inspiring and upbeat talk. What a great way to start a year in Rotary!
Service Project Kehauiki Village Dec 23, 2017 Sunsetters joined forces with other Oahu Clubs and donated bathroom, bedroom and kitchen supplies that can furnish 2 homes at the Kehauiki Village homes.
Thanks to our sponsor, Linda and Ken Fong, we met at their condo's Community Meeting Room.
Club Meeting Dec 20, 2017 Our last meeting for the year was held at another luxury condominium- Anaha. Program speaker was RCHS's Ambassadorial Scholar, Robbie Leung, who spoke about her experience as a Peace Corp volunteer in the PHilippines.

Dr. Julie Omori, Dean Jerris Hedges, Jim Hoban (Community Service Director) and Nicole Lemas (Prez) Club Meeting/Vocational Visit Dec 13, 2017 We had a vocational meeting at the John A Burns School of Medicine to learn about the H.O.M.E. Van that provides medical care to the homeless shelters on Oahu. Dean Jerris Hedges, Dr. Julie Omori (Medical Director) and Michael McNulty (Program Director) spoke about the program that makes a difference to the homeless women and children. We also presented a check that will support one of their initiatives.
Service Project/ Salvation Army Dec 9, 2017 Sunsetters rang and sang Christmas Carols for the Salvation Army on Dec 9th and 16th. Fun Community Project!
Social/ Christmas Party Dec 6, 2017 Sunsetters, guests and families gathered at Park Lane's Party Room for Italian cuisine by Chef Almar, fun games and singing at our annual Christmas Party. All had fun!
Club Meeting Nov 30, 2017 Our speaker tonight, Ary, newest member of the RCHS shared about her hometown in Russia and her passion to save the environment because the Lake where she is from is polluted.
Club Meeting Nov 15, 2017 Dr. Mary Boland, Dean of the UH School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, was tonight's speaker. WE learned about The Keiki Program--Licensed registered nurses staffing health rooms in schools. Attendance in school has increased and medical emergencies are addressed appropriately. RCHS presented the school with funds to support the program. Funds will be used to purchase keiki supplies for the health rooms.
Club Meeting Nov 8, 2017 Don Wallace, senior editor of Honolulu Magazine, spoke about the growth in Kakaako. Tonight we also installed Ari as our newest member of the club
Club Meeting Oct 30, 2017 Our last Monday meeting was facilitated by PE Mary Hoffman. She led an active discussion about the financial picture of our club and how we can increase our revenue. Rich Zegar spoke about the Foundation and how we can share our Time, Talent and Treasure!!
Club Meeting- Vocational Oct 23, 2017 Vocational Talks by Jewell and Mary H were the highlight of our meeting. Jewell, an ICU Nurse, makes a difference in her work everyday; while Mary H switched careers to become a special Ed teacher, which she finds gratifying. Discussion on meeting days was interactive and productive!
Club Meeting Oct 16, 2017 Evelyn Raposo’s title was Holistic Psychology and she included such “body tools” as meditation, yoga and what I usually call “unconventional” medical instruments.

Community Service Project Sep 24, 2017 Sunset Members, led by Mary Hoffman, manned the Fist Aid Station for the Century Bike Ride. UH Rotaract Students came to support the event as well.
Community Project Sep 23, 2017 Sunset Members worked with the Men's Shed wo sell donated equipment to raise funds for the Men's Shed. Senator Galutaria, who has been a big advocate was awarded recognition for his support.
Club Meeting Sep 18, 2017 Tonight's Speaker was Dr. Nguyen, UH Professor, who spoke about how to manage organization change and effective leadership strategies. Some of the snippets covered in a 30 minute session were helpful and informative.

  Community Service Project Sep 16, 2017 Sunset Members and UH Rotaract worked with the Waikiki Yacht Club to clean the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. The service project was followed with a nice lunch and fellowship.
Club Meeting Sep 11, 2017 Cynthia Yamasaki was our speaker tonight. We met at the Koolani Theater Room and enjoyed a motivational talk, good pizza from California Pizza and Marco's specialty salad. Jonathan showed us one of his artwork- a table centerpiece for the auction.

Club Meeting Aug 21, 2017 Club Meeting at the Koolani Theater was informative, entertaining and thought-provoking. The movie on health made us think of our food choices and how food affects our over all well-being. What a nice way to make a difference in our community. The clinic provides FREE dental care to all uninsured clients. Our very own Dr. Jonathan Okabe is a volunteer at the clinic and he organized this successful event.
Club Meeting Aug 7, 2017 Lt Col Charles Anthony was tonight's speaker. He informed the club about how we can be prepared for natural disasters and attack from Korea. Our state is more vulnerable for natural disasters, so emergency preparedness should include a 14 day supply of food and supplies. We also started with our first healthy dinner buffet, which was delicious in a more friendly setting in round table style seating. Lots of energy from President Nicole!

FELLOWSHIP Jul 1, 2017 We started the new Rotary Year with a fun fellowship at the Zegars' home. We all enjoyed the fellowship and great barbecue ribs cooked by Chef Rich. Dr. James Ham received the Rotarian of the Year award since he was not able to be at the Club's Installation Dinner.
President Installation and Awards Night Jun 26, 2017 Tonight, Marco handed the gavel to Nicole, who will take the reins as President. 70 guests enjoyed the entertainment by Mihana Souza and Kanoe "Tootsie" Cazimero plus fellowship with fellow members and guests. James Ham received the Rotarian of the Year award and Nicole Tsutahara received the Quiet Rotarian Award. It was a night of celebration!

Countdown to Koolani May 27, 2017 The RCHS had a different type of a fundraiser this year Chaired by PE Nicole Lemas. Auctions were done online and a gofundme account collected donations for our club's service projects. Donations to the D5000 Foundation also helped to fund our projects. Movie Night @ Koolani Mar 20, 2017 Sunsetters gathered at the Koolani Theater, thanks to JB and Mary for lending us the movie. The fellowship started with brief updates on service projects completed and upcoming projects. Club Meeting Jan 30, 2017 Jeanne Torres, Executive Director of Guide Dogs of Hawaii, was our speaker. Guide Dogs of Hawaii provides guide dogs and technology aids and training for every blind and visually impaired public school child in Hawaii. Her latest endeavor is to provide that same support to blind and visually disabled seniors, most of whom live below the poverty line. Jeanne was accompanied by her guide dog, Luke who spent the time snoozing,waiting for her voice command to “find the stairs” or “find the elevator button.
Club Meeting Jan 23, 2017 David Heenan, Club's speaker and author of "Hidden Heroes Finding Success in the Shadows" shared who the real life heroes are---like the Dance Instructors in the Cruise Ships who make women passengers smile and enjoy their cruise experience. All proceeds from the sale of his books were donated to the RCHS. Now.....he's our hero! Then we also recognized John Meyer for his Paul Harris +4 and Sarah Moy who received her blue badge. Kudos to all!

FELLOWSHIP Dec 12, 2016 Christmas was in the air at the Hale Koa, where Sunsetters had their annual Christmas Party. Christmas caroling by our members with Nicole L. ending the beautiful celebration with her solo of "O Holy Night" was "chicken skin." What a great way to end the year! Club Meeting Nov 7, 2016 Rear Admiral Phillip Sawyer was introduced by Paul Jurcsak, Sawyer’s mentor early in his career. Sawyer gave us an update on the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. He commented that we have amazing military strength here in the islands with every U.S. military component represented. He pointed out that the purpose of such military strength is to maintain our readiness whenever the need should arise.

Club Meeting Oct 24, 2016 David C. Duffy, Professor of Botany, Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology (EECB) told us about their efforts to eradicate fire ants. Fire ants, though the size of a celery seed, have a fierce bite. They have invaded Kauai, Hawaii, and now Oahu. To check your garden for them, spread a bit of peanut butter on a chopstick and lay it on your garden floor. If they gather on your chopstick, call the State Pest Hotline: 808-643-PEST

This popular rainforest site has miles of hiking trails, beautiful scenery, spectacular plant collections and is open to the public Monday through Saturday throughout the year.

Service Project Apr 29, 2016 17 Members of the RC of Honolulu Sunset met to put together 100 hygiene kits- 50 for men and 50 for women. After assembling all the kits, several members went to the various sites where the JABSOM HOME Medical Van provided care and handed the kits to the patients.

Service Project Apr 2, 2016 Sunsetters learned on the job training on how to put 15 lockers together for the US VETS Women Shelter. Directions were challenging but we all figured it out. Amazing how team work and fellowship make great combination.
Club Meeting Mar 28, 2016 Sunsetters enjoyed another informative and interesting meeting night with Dr. Amy Moran, Associate Professor of Marine Biology,at the University of Hawaii. Amy spoke about her current work in the oceans surrounding Antarctica, which focuses on the phenomenon of “polar gigantism” and adaptations of marine animals to extreme cold.

Multi Club Meeting Jan 15, 2016 Central Oahu Clubs met at the Plaza Club to listen to PDG Ayman's talk on Membership. We received talking points to apply and spread the word to invite new members.
Club Meeting Jan 11, 2016 After a 2 week break, our meeting was a full house. Our speaker for the meeting was the Chancellor of the University of Hawaii, Robert Bley-Vroman. He had a connection to our Romanian member, Lore, because he taught in Romania and could speak th language. Robert shared informative talk--proud to have a great university in Hawaii.
Club Meeting Dec 21, 2015 This meeting was an Off-site Vocational Visit at Jane Ferreira's employer at Kewalo Basin. John Eveleth, the Harbormaster for Kewalo Basin gave us an informative and interesting talk about Kewalo Basin. All who attended enjoyed Buca's cuisine and birthday cakes for Jane, who was celebrating her birthday.
Christmas Party Dec 19, 2015 Cheers to another fun fellowship at the BEDIONES' home. Nicole, Albert and Russell entertained the group with songs and music. Good food and great company enjoyed by all!
Club Meeting Dec 14, 2015 Cheers to our 20th Anniversary celebration. Charter members John, Ayman, and Gloria were in attendance. Historians John and Samir presented a slide show, with the help of Beth, Liz and Win. HOME and VA benefactors shared their stories and gratitude for our club's generosity. The HOME van was present for District leadership to see. DG DEL installed BUBU as the newest member of our club. We also voted on Marco's leadership team for 2016-2017. Lots of celebrations!

Service Project Dec 5, 2015 Rotary Clubs of Honolulu Sunset, Pau Hana, Kaneohe were at Lyon Arboretum to clearing the grounds of unnecessary plants in the Palm Garden. This young and energetic group from Canada has been coming to Hawaii for many years. This time, Peter Luongo's son, Paul, led the group to another rousing performance.

Club Assembly Jun 1, 2015 This meeting was a celebration for members to acknowledge our accomplishments as "Club of the Year" for the Large Club category. Pres Glen highlighted our activities and we listened to H.O.M.E. Speaker give us an update of their medical mission to the homeless population. Our club donated funds to support purchasing vaccines.

Da garden..... Jefferson Elementary School Visit May 4, 2015 Honolulu Sunset Rotarians visited the Jefferson Elementary garden, which our club supported for years. This year, we donated hydrophonic kits to grow sustainable fruits and vegetables. During the visit, members dropped off books donated to the Library. See pictures of kids proudly showing their books.

Club Meeting Apr 27, 2015 Our meeting this Monday included- Community Service Award to a Honolulu Police Department Detective, Elizabeth Merrill, and our club’s selection of the $5000 Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship to a deserving Kamehameha senior student. Our guest speakers were Donna Blanchard and Harry Wong from the Kuma Kahua Theater. Lore received the "Good Egg" award as Rotarian of the Month. It was another exciting meeting.

Rotarians at Work Day Mar 28, 2015 70 Rotarians from RC of Honolulu Sunset, Sunrise, Pau Hana, Metro, Waianae, Downtown Honolulu participated in making a difference in the lives of US Vets at the US Vets House, Kapolei. Our club served lunch to 100 vets, Rotarians, and guests while the other clubs put together fans and cabinets, book shelves, blinds, and collected clothes. Mahalo to all who were at the event

Jefferson Garden Feb 24, 2015 Our club started this garden several years ago at Jefferson Elementary and the students continued to develop the garden to what we saw--amazing plants. Our club visited the school and donated hydrophonic equipment to sustain the garden.

There was time for fellowship and a truth/false game. We learned that a few of our members survived a real survival experience?!! The highlight of the evening was the much-anticipated results of our Fundraiser-- yes! We reached our goal!!
Club Fundraiser: Hearty Gras Feb 14, 2015 What a great time we all had-- Mardi Gras on Valentine Day's Day. Guests were welcomed with a champagne drink,fundraiser activities like a Silent and Live Auction and dancing to the band of Pat King Koh. Décor by Mary Sears set a beautiful ambience at the Harbor View Center. Wine and beer tasting were enjoyed by many guests.

Our guest speaker for our meeting was Brian Silver and the Kalani High School Robotics Team. Nicole received the "good egg" award while her parents were visiting our club. A Marine representative spoke about Toys for Tot and collected the unwrapped toys that were donated by our generous members. There were also presents for the children of the HOME project. The night ended with Christmas Carols led by Nicole and the Reindeers. What a fun evening!

Il received his Paul Harris +3 Club Meeting/ Assembly May 19, 2014 The meeting was an open forum for members to discuss fundraising ideas- the good, the bad and the ugly. Mostly good came out of all the discussion and commentaries. Il also received his PH +3-- a member of 18 months!
Here is the table top surf board-- light enough to pack and take wherever they go Club Meeting May 12, 2014 We had a great venue for our meeting-- top of one of the luxurious condos on Oahu. The view, the food and best of all,the fellowship were enjoyed by all who attended.Our club acknowledged Kaz Nomi's many years of service as a Rotarian and gave a table top surf board, which he and Mitzuko can bring to Japan when they decide to leave Hawaii. The Australian Friendship Exchange Team Club Meeting May 5, 2014 Cinco de Mayo celebration was attended by 108 members and guests from our own club, Honolulu Sunrise (#1 Medium Club of the Year), Metro, Honolulu, Downtown Honolulu, West Honolulu, and Pau Hana. The Australian Friendship Exchange and Mexicali Rotarian, Elsa Soto Garcia were the special speakers. Great celebration- 2 clubs winning Clubs of the Year with AG and DGND Clint Schroder leading the clubs.
HOME Team were our guest speakers Club Meeting Apr 28, 2014 Dr. Jill Omori and 2 senior JABSOM medical students spoke about our community project and working with the H.O.M.E. van that provides healthcare to the homeless population on OAHU. Members had a chance to get a first hand look of the van. Thanks to Jane, we also donated 50 school back packs, which they were able to take with them.

This was our last Thursday meeting-then we switch over to Mondays. Siva Kumar, Club President from Malaysia, was welcomed by our members and Pres Jan. Jerry received his next Paul Harris and after the meeting ended, we watched fireworks off the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Club Meeting/ Assembly Jan 16, 2014 We had a lively discussion and interaction concerning the future of our club and reports/updates from various committees. A vote of the present members was taken to agree on the proposal from the WYC to move our meeting day to a Monday. Team Jane won the highest points for member participation. It was also fitting that our club celebrate Foundation month with Foundation awards. We had several Foundation awards- PP Beth received a banner on behalf of our members,to acknowlege our club as #! in the District. Service Project - Central Middle School Jan 22, 2011 The Rotary Clubs of Honolulu Sunset & Downtown Honolulu participated in Central Middle School's Annual Beautification Day. Rotarians worked along with other community groups, as well as students and faculty of Central Middle School to focus on needed areas of the school campus.

Since 2008, Art serves as the Special Assistant to the Commander of Navy Medicine West Regional Headquarters. In this position, he is responsible as a liaison for the Navy medical facilities and the future planning for Guam, Okinawa, and Japan.

This non-proft organization provides limitless services and care for Hawaii families who are caring for sick children in area hospitals. The Respite Night gives the parents a much needed reprieve from the stress of caring for an ill child. Eleven Honolulu Sunset Rotarians hosted a night of fun for the siblings of the families. Vocational Outing at Island Colony Hotel Jan 14, 2010 Vocational Director Jerry Taniyama organized a tour of the Island Colony Hotel for 66 Jefferson Elementary students and their teachers on Thursday, January 14. General Manager Patty Maher (a member of our club) coordinated this visit so the children could see what jobs were like in a hotel. This tour satisfies the Educational standard: "Career Planning Standard 2: Explore and understand educational and career options in order to develop and implement personal, educational, and career goals."

Operation Santa! Dec 8, 2009 Members of our Sunset Rotary Club enjoyed taking two HUGS families on a shopping trip to Wal-Mart. The families were very appreciative for the opportunity to shop for themselves and their children for Christmas. There just didn't seem to be enough money to spare on gifts this year after the medical bills were paid. This outing gave us all a much needed holiday lift.

Rotary District 5000 Foundation Gala Mar 14, 2009 The Rotary Foundation Gala was held at the Kahala Hotel on Friday, March 13.This black tie event was an enchanting evening of gourmet food and wine right on the beach at the Kahala. The setting was spectacular.
Scooters, runners, walkers, strollers, pets on leashes, all walking in community with one another for a good cause --- the eradication of polio.  Despite the rain, the Spirit of Rotary was evident! Early Act Club celebrates Literacy Month Mar 2, 2009 March is Literacy Month. Our Early Act Club 4th and 5th graders at Punahou School created interactive story aprons and then read books to the kindergarten kids. This is a great way to promote interest in reading!

HUGS House Respite Night Feb 20, 2009 Respite night is held twice a month at the HUGS house Kilauea Ave facility. The parents of hospitalized children have a well-deserved night off while the siblings are well-cared for duriing an evening of fun activities.

We appreciated it that Carol Kai, honorary Rotarian and Chairperson of the GAR, allowed Honolulu Sunset to include our Walk to End Polio flyers and registration forms in the 16,000 packets.

Our UH Manoa Rotaractors and our Early Act Club collected a Operation Gift Lift Dec 18, 2008 Honolulu Sunset Rotarians contributed $600 for local kine food gifts for our Hawaii troops serving in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. Wholesale Unlimited in Manoa Marketplace packed all of the videos, Music CD;s, books, photos of Hawaii, postcards, etc. donated by the UH Rotaractors and the Early Act Club of Punahou School.

November Fellowship Nov 1, 2008 Six O'ahu Rotary Clubs met on board the Super Ferry for a fun Fellowship event hosted by our Club. It was a relaxing evening as we all watched the sun set in the West. We enjoyed the ambience, good conversations, good food and wine, and exciting tours of the ship itself. Our Super Ferry hostess for the evening was Lani Olds, who has visited our club several times. The members filled coffee mugs full of yummy goodies and personal items for the Mother's Respite night at the HUGS HOUSE. HUGS offers assistance to families of children who have life threatening diseases. The mothers are hosted at the HUGS house once a month for a night of pampering!
Mahalo to a Rotary Angel named Laura Steelquist who sent over a driver and a van from her company to Pres. Rita's home to pick up the supplies and deliver them to the Rotary Club of Waianae Coast to be distributed to the area schools! The Santa Van Sep 1, 2008 Costco manager and Sunset member Johnny Sanchez was able to collect TEN crates of school supplies that had been labeled "seconds" and bring them to President Rita's home. Thank you , Johnny for saving all of those supplies!

September Fellowship Night Sep 1, 2008 Honolulu Sunset Rotarians enjoyed the dance performance by the Cambodian Future Light Orphanage children. Our club gave a donation to pay for one of the dancing group's meals while here in Hawaii.
The Great American Yard Sale Sep 1, 2008 Our Yard Sale mini fundraiser was a huge success and a lot of fun and fellowship time too! Mahalo to David Short for giving his time, talents, and treasures to help organize this event. Thank you to Paul Jurcsak and David for spending the night in Hunakai park to guard all of the donations. And thank you to all of our members who came out on Friday night to set up and then came back again on Saturday to help with the sale! We appreciate all of our members' donations and help with this event.
Community Service Work Day at Jefferson School Sep 1, 2008 Mahalo to Chip Buchmiller, our Community Service Director, for organizing and leading the charge on this work day at our adopted school, Jefferson Elementary. This was really backbreaking work! We power washed the sidewalks, painted playground equipment , and repainted sidewalk games throughout the school yard. Hard work, but satisfying! The school looked great when we finished! Mahalo to the Rotarians who came out to help us!

Our club donated $250 in collections for the Food Bank.
Willa is one of those Angels from God. She finds more bargains and food for the needy! Often she brings clothes and books to the school kids and families who live out of their cars.   Club Meeting Jeanne Torres, Executive Director of Guide Dogs of Hawaii. Guide Dogs of Hawaii provides guide dogs and technology aids and training for every blind and visually impaired public school child in Hawaii. Jeanne was accompanied by her guide dog, Luke.
  Vocational Visit to HASR Bistro Our club members enjoyed a visit to HASR Bistro and Winery. Terry Kakazu, owner, and Chef Rodney took the time to explain about their background, wine info while we enjoyed special cuisine and our favorite beverage.

  Club Cultural Meeting We had our off-site meeting at the East West Center-- Bollywood: the Dance and Costumes of India. AFter the demonstration, we headed out to Cafe Sistina for fellowship and Italian cuisine enjoyed by all.

  Club Meeting The RCHS meeting day was changed to Mondays. Tonight, our first Monday night meeting showed great attendance and energy. PE Glen facilitated the meeting in Jan's absence. Speaker Shelley Oates inspired and brought a lot of energy in the room. She helped us visualize the Olympics, like we were with her. Inspite of adversities, she made her dream come true by winning an OLympic Medal. We rode the ride with her. The Hobans received their PH #6 with a ruby stone.

  Jefferspn Elementary Visit Honolulu Sunset Members visited Jefferson Elementary to donate books for the Library and get an update from Principal Garrett Zakahi about the sustainable project at the school. Our club donated hydrophonic kits, which are growing sustainable fruits and vegetables.

  Jerry Chang Awards The Jerry Chang Peacemaker Award is presented annually to commemorate Jerry Chang’s passion for peace. The award will be given to a Rotary Club District 5000 committee, group, or member who exhibits modesty, compassion, and persistence in providing leadership in the area of peacemaking to our island community or the world at large. ‘Peacemaking’ may include, but not limited to, a wide field of work including humanitarian work in peace movements, advocacy of human rights, and mediation of conflicts.
  Club Meeting October is Vocational Month, so tonight's meeting was dedicated to vocational talks. Nicole aka "RCHS Oprah" interviewed Mary Hoffman and Jewell on their vocations. Mary had an education background but worked in the administrative field for several years. Today, she is a special education teacher, which she finds challenging but satisfying. Jewell is an RN at Straub with an ICU background. She is a volunteer, working with Dr. James Ham, providing care in Papua, New Guinea.

  Club Meeting Andrew Porter is a licensed captain and worked as a maritime attorney in both Hawai‘i and Guam. He joined Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species (CGAPS). As a CGAPS legal fellow, Mr. Porter works with Hawai‘i’s Division of Aquatic Resources in preventing the introduction of aquatic invasive species through ballast water, biofouling, and aquaculture. Leah Laramee is a natural resource planner for DLNR DOFAW. Part of the reason I love my job is that every day brings new challenges and adventures.
