Five Avenues of Service - Vocational Service

Vocational Service-

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. Observed each October, Vocational Service Month  spotlights Rotary club projects related to this avenue, offering opportunity for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in service projects.

  • Vocational Talks by Members- Members were given the opportunity to share their vocation at the club meetings. This increased our awareness about networking with fellow Rotarians and improved fellowship, as we were able to learn about fellow Rotarians’ business culture and background.  The talks centered around how they chose their vocation and how they apply the 4 way test in their business.  It was always an interesting exchange of information enjoyed by our members and guests at our weekly meetings.


    Mentor an Intern for a Vocational Experience- An accounting intern was seeking experience to work in an accounting firm.  The Club placed this intern in a variety of work settings.  Two of our club members mentored this intern who was supported by our club.  This intern attended the club meetings and was welcomed by all the club members. 

    Another intern in healthcare was seeking a vocational experience.  She was a college student from a mainland university who was able to intern in one of our club member’s place of business for 3 months.  This student was hosted by a club member, providing free rent and lodging for the student. 


    Vocational Awards were given to Mentors and Entrepreneurs- During Vocational Month, the club recognized businesses who mentored a couple of students in their businesses--an accounting firm, healthcare and transportation business. 

    Non-Rotarians who supported the mentoring program were recognized with a certificate and a Paul Harris award.  They were educated about Paul Harris and the Rotary concept of “service above self” and Rotary’s ethical and business philosophy.

    Employees of businesses were recognized for supporting the youth and received a Paul Harris award with their plaque and certificate.  Their managers were invited to support the employees’ initiatives.

    A fellow member of our club, an Entrepreneur, received a Vocational Award  to acknowledge his support for the Youth, the Rotaract and for mentoring a young intern.  One of the employers was recognized for providing free transportation from UH for the Rotaracts’ to participate in the American Cancer Walk in Ford Island.


    Vocational Visit- Members enjoy visiting members’ work places.  This gives fellow Rotarians an opportunity to showcase their workplace and increase business networking.  The members used this opportunity to get to know fellow Rotarians’ work place and use them for future reference.  Members also used this opportunity to demonstrate their Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions.  Fellowship followed vocational visits, which members enjoyed.


    Support our Veterans- Our club supported a family from the Fisher House. The Veteran was going through medical challenges and could not find employment.  Club members took out the family holiday shopping followed by lunch.  The veteran shared his vocational experience with our members.


    Promote the 4 Way Test – Club members took some time off to distribute dictionaries to 3rd graders in elementary schools and shared the 4 –way test with all the students and teachers.  The members shared practical applications of the 4 way test in their every day living.

    The 4 Way Test is promoted at all meetings. At the end of the meeting, the 4 way test is recited prior to adjourning the meeting.
